The Seeley Hills Classic is the second-largest annual classic cross-country ski event on the Birkebeiner Trail. The 42K race is sanctioned by the US Ski & Snowboard and is an American Birkebeiner qualifying race. The marathon race also connects some of the biggest cross-country ski events across the region, as the Seeley Hills Classic is the first of six races in the CXC Marathon Cup series.
The race serves as the major fundraiser for the Seeley Ski Club, allowing it to promote skiing in a number of ways. The club was responsible for lighting the Birkie Trail at the Highway 00 area, and has developed a new 15K Sawyer County Ski Trail in the Seeley area, which it maintains and grooms. The club has also purchased grooming and mowing equipment for use on those trails.
The races are scheduled for 22 and 42 kilometers in an out-and-back format starting at 10 a.m. at Highway 00. The event also stages a 5K high school race, which starts at 10:15 a.m. on the south side of Highway 00.
Skiers in the long race will start at the north side of 00, head north on the Birkie Classic Trail and will return on the Birkie Trail back to 00. They will then cross 00 and ski south to the turnaround and return north to finish at the warming building.
Starting on the Classic trail, skiers in the short race head south son the classic trail to the turnaround and head back north to the finish at the Birkie warming cabin.
White River Sports Timing is family owned and operated. They are located in northwest Wisconsin within the Chequamegon National Forest of central Bayfield County. Your complete results are published on their web site - preliminary results are live during the race and final results are posted within minutes of the last finisher.
The Penman Prizes are awarded to the top three finishers of both the male and female divisions of the 42K race: $1,000 for first, $250 for second and $125 for third.
Overall winners of the 42K and 22K races will receive an award, as well as the top two in each age class plus the wooden ski class. Awards will be presented and raffle prizes drawn following the race at the Sawmill Saloon.
Winners of the 42K receive cash awards in first, second and third place for men and women’s divisions. Age class winners in both races will receive pottery from Blue Moon.
The first 500 skiers registered will receive a Swix classic ski hat, and each finisher receives a bowl of soup and roll at the Sawmill Saloon in Seeley after the race, where awards and raffle prize drawings will be held.
Registration fee is $50 through 10/5/18, $60 through 11/30/18, $70 through 1/11/19 and $80 1/12/19 to 1/13/19.
Skiers may register online, by mail or in person at the Sawmill Saloon, either Friday, Jan. 13, from 5 to 9 p.m. or Saturday, Jan. 14, from 7 to 9 a.m. BIB pick up will be at this time.
A spaghetti feed will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. the night before the race at the Sawmill Saloon, where raffle tickets for skis and merchandise will be available for purchase.
